Week One, Welcome!

Hi everyone, I'm Eleanor Hamlin. I'm new to Brandman University; this week has been my first! My major is Criminal Justice with a forensic emphasis. My career aspirations are to be a forensic scientist. I have always been interested in psychology, so I want my minor to be criminal psychology. Whenever I tell anyone of my plans, they automatically think of Criminal Minds and CSI. Those are actually great examples of what I would like to do!

I would like to research more of the specific aspects of the forensic field. One of the jobs I would like to focus on learning more about is ballistics, but that's only one of the topics in forensics that I'm aware of. After reading the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, an area I would like to improve on is finding information that is pertinent to the topic I am researching and deciphering what is the "fluff" from the important information. Also, I would like to learn how to find the accuracy, validity, of a researched article instead of reading and quoting something that anyone can publish.

  1. Hey Eleanor. I find you career choice to be interesting because of the fact that there are so many avenues you can take when it comes to forensics. You mentions ballistics, but there is blood spatter, forensic dentistry, and fingerprints. I think with your interest in psychology, you might want to look into forensic behavior study where you can put your forensic and psychology work together. Good luck this session.

  2. Hello Eleanor, I find your career choice very interesting. I think it is funny how you mention that whenever you tell anyone your plans they think of Criminal Minds and CSI. I am one of those people. I love those types of shows, Law and Order and NCIS being my favorite. Whenever I imagine a forensic scientist I imagine someone working in one of those really nice labs like on the television shows. When I was younger I thought that being a forensic scientist would be the job for me, but as I got older and the more Law and Order I watched, the less I wanted that job. I just do not think I could be around all the blood and things like that on daily basis. Good Luck with your career aspirations!

  3. Hello Eleanor,

You're career choice is a good one. Having being a police officer, your area of interest is definitely an exciting one. Being able to analyze ballistics can tell you a lot, almost like that hidden story where only you can read it. Good Luck

  4. Eleanor,
Your blog is very interesting and your career choice. Having two nephews in the police force gives me more interest in the work you do and your career path. I'm fascinated by the case in Australia of the
blade runner and I think forensic's will solve that case. I wonder if you are also taking courses in 3-d computer software where you can track the evidence to plot it. I saw one done of the Jodi Arais case which frankly, forensic's in that case is so compelling
and convicting. Anyway, interesting to read your information on this subject.
